A groundbreaking songwriter and guitar player in the genre of Thrash, Jeff Hanneman received a tribute from an unlikely source; having a roundabout named after him in a Polish city.
Two fans of the legendary band honored Hanneman by renaming a roundabout in the small Polish town of Jawornzo “Jeff Hanneman’s Circle Pit – unforgettable Slayer guitarist”, Rolling Stone reported. Hanneman, who wrote many of Slayer’s most influential songs, died in 2013 of liver failure, after contracting a rare flesh eating disease two years before.
Blabbermouth.net noted Slayer fans Joannę and Krzysztofa Czuszek bid 15,800 Polish złoty (approximately $5,100) in an auction to rename the intersection. The auction was for a charity that purchases specialized equipment for children's emergency medicine and deserving health care of seniors
Many fans and musicians were up in arms when during the “In Memoriam” segment of the Grammy’s, Hanneman was not mentioned, and some feel this may have been a more fitting tribute, considering it was directly from fans.
Hanneman’s last appearance with Slayer was for the “Big Four” concert in Indio, California, the site of Coachella, which included Anthrax, Metallica, and Megadeth.
