Rihanna takes a stand against AIDS, joins MAC's Viva Glam

Rihanna has joined the effort to fight against AIDS by joining Viva Glam by MAC.

The MAC AIDS Fund has expanded quite a lot within the last few years. Following the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, it has become the second-largest private donor to AIDS organizations.

According to the New York Times, last week Viva Glam by MAC has signed Rihanna as its new ambassador and was able to receive endorsement of Michel Sidibé, who is the executive director of Unaids, which is the agency fighting AIDS for the United Nations.

Sidibé hopes that Rihanna’s popularity will greatly enhance the public’s awareness of the campaign and the participation of others. He hopes that with Rihanna’s encouragement, all of her fans and followers will go get tested.

“I don’t get a lot of retweets,” Sidibé said. “But if Rihanna posted a similar message, it could change the whole dynamic.”

Rihanna, too, spoke out about her excitement to the cause.

“I’m honored to join forces with the MAC AIDS Fund and UNAIDS in the fight against AIDS,” she said. “I want to help reach as many young people around the world as I can. While we need to begin with education, we also need to deliver HIV testing and treatment to the millions of young people who need our help, which is exactly what we plan to do.”

To support Viva Glam is easy, buy a lipstick.

A grant to UNAIDS has made it possible that through the sale of MAC’s Viva Glam lipstick and lipglass, MAC will donate 100 percent of the sale price to fight HIV.
