President Obama signs farm bill that cuts $800 million from food stamps

President Obama signs a bill that benefits farmers, but it also cuts funding to the food stamp program that impacts a lot of New Yorkers.

According to the Atlanta Blackstar, the farm bill extends federal crop insurance and helps with the maple syrup, hemp and peanut farmers, while cutting $800 million from the $100 billion annual budget.

The bill was signed at Michigan State University on Friday, where no Republican representatives attended. Although a lot of Americans use the food stamp program, several of those affected by this bill reside in the state New York.

The New York Daily News reports, the cut will translate into approximately a $90 monthly decrease for 850,000 people that receive the food stamps and roughly 350,000 of those people live in the state of New York.

New York is 1 of 16 states that gives residents heating aid and food stamp help –in fact it is the largest.

The food stamp cut is about one percent of the overall yearly budget.
