The initiative had a slow start, but NBC is hoping that the offer will stir more interest in the new technological advance. On Monday, the network said it will give subscribers a 30-minute "free pass" to Olympics video, according to the Associated Press. After five minutes, cell phone users will be asked to show that they are paying customers.
According to Reuters, NBC will begin its Olympics telecast on February 6 from Sochi in Russia. This could mean an increase in ratings as the sporting event features the best athletes from all over the world. It is an opportunity for the network to highlight its regular reality shows and sit-coms.
Watching sporting events on mobile phones is nothing new. In 2012, nearly 10 million mobile devices were authenticated for Olympics video during the London games.
