In the first episode of House of Cards season two, it seems that everyone was shocked by Kate Mara’s death as she was pushed off of a train platform by Kevin Spacey’s character, Frank. Since, Mara has been on a media tour promoting the second season of the Netflix original series.
On Thursday, Feb. 20, Mara sat down on Live With Kelly and Michael where she discussed what had happened to her character and who knew what was going to happen.
“I can’t really believe it happened either,” she said to Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan. “It’s hard, I had to be really creative with people asking me how things were going on the show … but my family members didn’t even really know. They were swearing at me…”
While Mara’s family may have been surprised, according to MTV Mara was not. She claimed to have known before she officially signed on for the role.
“Fincher said to me, ‘The great news is that I really would like you to play her,” Mara explained, “the bad news is you’re only going to last until episode one in season two.’”
Mara also didn’t realize the large impact her character’s death would have on the fans watching the series. She explained to MTV the countless amounts of tweets she received as the fans were watching.
“Even on the plane coming here … this random dude was like ‘I’m so pissed off you’re dead,” Mara said. “My response was ‘Thank you so much, that’s so sweet!’”
How was she able to fool all of the fans? Mara got very creative.
“I took a bunch of random pictures on the set in the two weeks that it took me to shoot my final episode and then throughout the months when I wasn’t shooting we’d tweet a picture as if I was on set and I really wasn’t,” she told TVLine, “Very Zoe Barnes.”
Mara's next project will be Marvel's Fantastic Four reboot.
