June Squibb, nominated at age 84, is hopeful for the Oscars

June Squibb, 84, has never been nominated for an Oscar before. She says it’s fun to be recognized on film by the Academy at this stage in her career. Squibb spoke to the LA Times, “I’ve worked my whole life - years on stage - and a lot of wonderful things have happened, but it’s fun to have it in film.”

She played Kate Grant in Nebraska, the movie about an aging father who travels with his estranged son in order to claim a Mega Sweepstakes Marketing prize. Squibb is in great company, as Nebraska is nominated for six awards including Best Motion Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Achievement in Directing, Best Achievement in Cinematography, and Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role.

Squibb has been enjoying the surprising success of the film. She told The New York Post, “We never thought this would be such a hit. That started in Cannes. When p.r. surrounded it, suddenly Oscar talk began. Slowly it began to sink in that we’d done something great.”

Squibb will be wishing the best for the film and her first Academy Award. The Oscars will be held on March 2 at the Dolby Theatre.
