Jim Parsons explains it’s easy to play Sheldon Cooper on ‘The Big Bang Theory’

On Feb. 25, Jim Parsons sat down at the Today Show to discuss his role as the socially awkward character Sheldon Cooper and his upcoming role as host of Saturday Night Live.

When asked how difficult it is to play Sheldon Cooper who is not only awkward but has a difficult time empathizing with others, Parson admitted that it’s easier than people imagine.

“It’s surprisingly easy,” Parsons told Matt Lauer. “I think that the writing is really good, and I think that there’s undeniably part of myself that understands what it is to feel outsider. Probably everybody does. I think that’s part of the reason the show’s so successful. But if you’re just willing to access that and tap into that, it’s not hard at all to feel like ‘no one understands me.’”

However, the next gig Parsons has planned may not come so easy. He’ll be hosting Saturday Night Live, which after he’s looked down the long line of photos of the legendary stars that have hosted the show, he admitted it’s “intimidating.”

“It feels like I’m ruining the club that they created,” Parsons explained as the Today Show showed a quick clip of the long list of celebrities the show has seen. “You know what I mean? You grow up going, ‘That’s some Hollywood royalty that gets to host that.’ [But] apparently I was wrong, ‘cause here I am.”

While some may think that Parsons maybe intimidated by the live feature that Saturday Night Live brings for Parsons, he’s not afraid.

“I love live [television],” he said, explaining that The Big Bang Theory is practically taped live, as they use a live audience. “We tape it live, and while you do get a chance to go over your mistakes there, should you make one, we are doing it live.”

You can catch Jim Parsons on Saturday Night Live March 1 at 11:30p.m.
