Frank Ocean song ‘Super Rich Kids’ subject of copyright lawsuit

TufAmerica records files another lawsuit of copyright infringement, this time naming Frank Ocean’s “Super Rich Kids” sample of Mary J. Blige’s “Real Love”.

According to The Hollywood Reporter TufAmerica doesn’t actually own the Blige song, but is calling foul because “Real Love” contains a sample of The Honeydrippers “Impeach The President”, which they do own. Basically, a sample of a sample was used without authorization.

Rolling Stone also reported TufAmerica also similar copyright lawsuits against Jay Z for a sample on 2009’s “Run This Town”, and Beastie Boys for supposed samples used on Licensed To Ill’s “Hold It, Now Hit It” and “The New Style”, as well as Paul Boutique’s song “Car Thief”. The copyright lawsuit initially refused by the courts for a dismissal, stated the statute of limitations, which is only three years, had expired and TufAmerica could not rightfully sue for the songs, the latest of which was over 20 years old.

So far, no comment has been made by either Frank Ocean, or his label Universal Music Group.
