A federal jury has found Former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin guilty of corruption charges on Wednesday.
Nagin has been found guilty of 20 counts. Nagin accepted bribes and gratuities from contractors in exchange for helping them to secure millions of dollars of work, according to the Associated Press. The two term mayor was charged with accepting money in payoffs. He was also accused of moving some of the money allocated for Hurricane Katrina recovery into a company owned by his sons.
Nagin, 57, did not look obviously upset outside the New Orleans courtroom. He said, “I’m at peace with this for a long time. I’m good.”
Nagin left office in 2010. He was indicted in January 2013. The jury heard from other 30 witnesses in the case, including contractors who already plead guilty. Nagin’s former technology chief, Greg Meffert, is awaiting sentencing. He allegedly helped a businessman to bribe Nagin with lavish vacation trips.
According to Reuters, Nagin will be sentenced later. His penalty could be up to 20 years in prison.
