A letter from the remaining members of the Russian punk band Pussy Riot disavowed two former band mates for their new ideological agenda.
BBC News reports that the two members under controversy, Maria Alyokhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, recently appeared at an Amnesty International benefit concert with super star Madonna. In the letter, the band insisted that such a performance goes against their integrity, and that their music is often “staged only in unpredictable locations and public places not designed for traditional entertainment.”
According to Time, Alyokhina and Tolokonnikova were imprisoned for 16 months for an anti-Putin protest outside a cathedral in Moscow. At the benefit, a translator for the ousted Russian duo praised fans, Madonna, and Amnesty International for their support, and called for freedom throughout Russia and the rest of the world.
“We have to remember freedom is not a given, it is something that we have to fight for and we have to stand for every day.”
The Pussy riot claims to have formed on principles of feminism and anti-authoritarian rule, but retain an anti-capitalist agenda. Despite the split, Pussy riot ended the letter with praise to the women and their future endeavors.
