David Beckham starts MLS team in Miami

After a whirlwind career, and one of the most recognized sports figures in the world, David Beckham will soon be back on the soccer pitch but this time as an owner of a new MLS team in Miami.

CNN was at the press conference on Wednesday where Beckham made the announcement of the new franchise. “I want to create a team that is personal to me,” Beckham stated. “I know this city is ready for soccer, football, and this is going to be successful.”

When Becks signed on to play in the MLS in 2007, there was a clause in his contract which gave him the option to create a franchise for ten million dollars.

The Miami Herald also noted MLS Commissioner Don Garber stated, “This is the first time in the modern era than an ex-athlete is joining the ranks of ownership.”

Beckham’s career came at the age of 16 when he was signed by British giant Manchester United in 1991, and made his debut the following year. He has also played with Spain’s Real Madrid, Italy’s A.C. Milan, and came to America in 2007 playing with the L.A. Galaxy, where he won the MLS Cup twice. In 2013 he played in the French league with Paris Saint-Germain, where he became the first English player to win four league titles in four different countries. He retired after that season.

The pressure will be on for the former English captain, but after boosting American soccer to a new level, where many international players have been following as well, the world will anxiously await to see how the next chapter for Beckham goes.
