Country star Brad Paisley’s wife is dealing with her mother and her worsening dementia.
According to ABC News, Kimberly Williams-Paisley learned that her mother had been diagnosed with dementia, but there was no cure or treatment for it. Her mother was just 61 years of age when she was diagnosed.
Williams-Paisley said, "Since then, I've watched a passionately joyful woman, a devoted mother, an engaged listener and friend deteriorate and transform into someone almost unrecognizable. It's been agonizing to slowly lose her.”
As her mother’s conditioned worsened, it became harder for Williams-Paisley to visit her. Williams-Paisley said that when she would get home, she would just break down and would sob until she was sore the following day. Her mother would be unable to write or even pronounce the name of her own grandson.
Williams-Paisley’s mother soon became too unstable to live at home with her daughter and grandchild. She ended up being taken to a long-term care facility.
"The move was the hardest change my tight-knit family has ever had to endure,” said Williams-Paisley.
However, with close support from friends and family, Williams-Paisley realized that she could not isolate herself from her mother but just had to approach the circumstances a different way.
As earlier reported by People Magazine, Williams-Paisley had to love her mother in an “innocent” way. She learned to talk to her mother in a simpler way with more small gestures like rubbing cream on her mother’s dry hands.
"In the living room of my mom's new home, I wrapped my arms around this changed woman," she said. "Then I got up to get her some juice and a straw. When I came back to her, she had forgotten me. But joy spread on her face as she discovered me for the first time all over again. We both cheered."
