Cambodian filmmaker Rithy Panh discusses his Oscar nominated film, ‘The Missing Picture’

Cambodian filmmaker Rithy Panh takes on political strife and loss in The Missing Picture, a movie nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at this year’s Academy Awards.

The Missing Picture focuses on Pahn’s story of survival. According to the Associated Press, Panh said, "I had to find a way to work with my memories. When you survive a genocide, it's like you've been radiated by a nuclear bomb. It's like you've been killed once already, and you come back with death inside of you."

It is the first time that Panh has been nominated for an Academy Award. He is facing tough competition in the Oscar category of Best Foreign Language Film. Other films nominated in this category include The Broken Circle Breakdown directed by Felix van Groeningen, An Episode in the Life of an Iron Picker directed by Danis Tanovic, Two Lives directed by Georg Maas, The Notebook directed by Janos Szasz, and Omar directed by Hany Abu-Assad.

Panh says that he feels enormous pride going to Los Angeles for the Oscars. It is a great step for a filmmaker from Cambodia.

The 86th Annual Academy Awards will be held on March 2 at the Dolby Theatre.
