Carondelet High School for Girls in Concord, C.A. apologized today for having a racist menu that included fried chicken, cornbread and watermelon in celebration of Black History Month after students and parents protested against it.
Celebrating a month dedicated to the accomplishments and achievements by influential Black Americans is the true reason behind the month-long holiday. In attempts of trying to uplift the celebration, some misguided ideas were criticized.
In a letter sent to parents, Principal Nancy Libby said, "I'd like to apologize for the announcement and any hurt this caused students, parents or community members," reports NBC Bay Area.
Although the school might not have intentionally aimed at glorifying a stereotype, indeed that is what happened. Hopefully going forward more thought and research will go into creating interesting ways for schools to celebrate Black History Month.
The Wire writes, the foods themselves are not racist, it is the negative connotation and subsequent stereotype associated with the food that is the problem.
