American Idol returned this week for the live shows of its thirteenth season. As always, the show brought out the biggest singing competition and amazing singers as they compete for the title of 2014 American Idol.
Thursday’s show opened with a medley of songs sung by the contestants. They began with One Republic’s current single, “Counting Stars,” as they playfully interacted with the American Idol backlot. They then transitioned to “Radioactive” by Imagine Dragons as they all emerged from the audience and ended up on stage as a group.
Host, Ryan Seacrest broke the 13 contestants into three groups. Out of those three, one person from each group would be sent into the bottom three. The bottom three would then get the opportunity to be saved by the judges, while one would be sent home.
In the first bunch of contestants finding out if they move on to next week, Ben was the first contestant that was safe. Alex followed him right after. Gina was also safe, leaving Malaya in the first bottom three this season. Judge, Jennifer Lopez voiced her opinion about the unfavored decision, saying Malaya has a powerhouse voice and does not deserve to be there.
After the first round, Candice Glover graced the stage and performed two songs off her latest album, Music Speaks. She sang “Cried” and “Same Kinda Man” as the crowd cheered in appreciation. The American idol alumni took home the crown in the twelfth season of the successful show. She was the first female to win the show since Jordin Sparks won in 2007. Glover’s album was released last week and debuted at #14 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
The second group gave Dexter a spot in week two, as he was the first name called to be safe. Majesty was called after, giving her another week in the show as well. MK was unfortunately put in the bottom three, giving Sam another week to perform.
On Wednesday’s live show, an ongoing segment was introduced giving each of the contestants 20 seconds to give fans five facts about themselves. On Thursday’s show, the judges also partook in the segment. Harry Connick Jr. admitted that he’d never seen Keith Urban naked, but would like to. This created an ongoing joke throughout the episode, later referenced by Seacrest in his segment.
This season, the judges and mentor, Randy Jackson will spotlight up and coming musicians that they feel will catch their big break in 2014. Keith Urban chose UK musician, Jake Bugg, this week. The young performer sang Urban’s “Me and You.” Co-signed by Urban, Bugg is slowly gaining momentum in the states, and a performance on one of the most successful reality competitions definitely won’t hurt his career.
Kristen was revealed as the final person for the bottom three, giving Caleb, Jessica and CJ a spot in next week’s show.
As Kristen, MK and Malaya awaited their fate, Ryan gave the judges a few minutes to give their opinion of who didn’t deserve to be in the bottom three. The first person safe was MK. Between Malaya and Kristen, only one came out on top. Kristen was sent packing as Malaya got a spot on the couch. For her save me song, Kristen sang Adele’s “Turning Tables.” To be saved by the judges, all three have to unanimously agree to save the contestant Unfortunately for her, the song was too big for her shaky voice, sending her home as the first eliminated contestant from season 13 of American Idol.
Tune in next week to American Idol as the contestants take on a new theme: Home. Idol airs on Fox on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8 p.m.
