Neon may seem a little less than expected of a band that hasn’t put out a in four years, especially considering it was their major label debut, but the newly invented Versa give us three songs showcasing their now-more electronic style, leaving us wanting more.
The once VersaEmerge, now simply Versa, stretch their creative legs, leaning more to an electronic beat and tempo throughout the three song EP. Although it may come as a shock to many fans, considering there being very few electronic undertones to the band’s Fixed at Zero debut with a more alternative rock style, Neon with all its synthesized glory is still a solid effort, highlighting lead singer Sierra Kay’s vocal ability and strength.
The title track kicks off the album with pulsating electronic beats and pop undertones, while the second song “Illusion” stretches the imagination of their sound with an industrial edge, but Sierra’s vocals, with band mate Blake Harnage’s vocals weaving in and out, still keep the alternative sensibility and layering of the song. The near six minute closer “Wanderlust” almost mix the styles of the first two songs, with Sierra’s ethereal vocal cutting through.
Formerly on the Fueled By Ramen label, which handles Paramore among others, VersaEmerge drew many comparisons to their label mates. Versa’s Neon might shift the conversation about them being the next Garbage, or the like. Whichever way the band goes toward in the future, undoubtedly, fans wish they would hurry up and give us another full length album.
