Pussy Riot members to inspect U.S. prisons

Released from a Russian prison in December, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina, two members of the band Pussy Riot, are planning a trip to the U.S. to inspect women’s prisons and talk at a concert event in New York.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the two women are scheduled to come to the United States and “inspect the conditions of inmates” and speak at a concert organized by Amnesty International. The amnesty bill saw their release from prison in Russia, where they were sentenced to a two-year prison term for anti-Putin “punk prayer”. Third member Yekaterina Samutsevich, who is not taking part, was released on probation in 2012.

The Huffington Post notes the Amnesty International “Bringing Human Rights Home” concert features The Flaming Lips, Imagine Dragons, and Lauren Hill. The concert is taking place at the Barclays Center in New York City on February 5.

Tolokonnikova and Alyokhina have no plans to perform but will speak to concert goers in an attempt to raise awareness of the plight of prisoners of conscience around the world.
