One Direction takes home new record industry award

X-Factor sensation One Direction, or 1D to Directioners, was named the most popular recording artist for 2013 for an award that now counts streaming services such as Spotify, along with the normal CD sales and downloads.

Reuters reported streaming music has soared in popularity in recent years and Spotify boasts 24 million active users around the world. Eminem took the No. 2 spot and Justin Timberlake at No. 3.

The brainchild of Simon Cowell, One Direction’s third album Midnight Memories quickly catapulted to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 at the time of its release in 2013. This would make them the first band in Billboard history to have their first three albums debut at No. 1.

The “Story of My Life” hit makers are keeping fans fully engaged recently too having just released a teaser for their new video to the album’s title track “Midnight Memories.” In the 15 second teaser Harry is working behind a food counter when the other members coming in, and by the looks of it, start a scuffle. MTV also posted a few GIFs from the complete video. The video comes out on Friday.
