Louisville head football coach Charlie Strong is expected to accept an offer by Texas to be its head football coach. He met with the Louisville coaching staff Saturday morning, telling them no decision has been made yet.
If Strong does accept the Texas job, he will be replacing Mack Brown, who stepped down in December. Brown was with the Longhorns for 16 seasons. Strong is in his fourth year at Louisville. He led Louisville to the BCS last year and finished this year at 12-1, according to the Associated Press. While at Louisville, Strong has a 37-15 record.
The Longhorns won the national championship in 2005 and returned to the championship game after the 2009 season. In each of the last three seasons, they have lost at least four games, and have an 18-17 record in the Big 12 over the last four years. The Longhorns had a 8-5 record this year.
Strong isn’t the only coach that the Longhorns have been looking at. Baylor’s Art Briles and UCLA’s Jim Mora were also considered, but Briles and Mora pulled their names from consideration on Friday, according to CBS Sports. Florida State’s Jimbo Fisher and Auburn’s Guz Malzahn could be considered if Strong doesn’t take the offer.
Strong would be the Longhorns first black head football coach.
