Kendrick Lamar might have gone home with zero awards at last nights Grammy’s, but his performance with Imagine Dragons, seems to have stolen the show and proved how great the rapper really is. This performance was one of the more questionable and unusual duos before the show began considering the rapper and rock band’s songs “M.A.A.D City” and “Radioactive” are completely different, but the mash up of the two was all social media could talk about.
The performance started up with Imagine Dragons playing hit song “Radioactive” until Lamar delivered a passionate and ecstatic entrance with his famous “Yak Yak Yak Yak” opening to his song “M.A.A.D City” that never fails to make a crowd go wild. The energy of this mash up was incredible and Rolling Stone reports that it was the best-received performance of the night.
Lamar was nominated for seven awards last night, and shockingly went home with none. He was GQ’s rapper of the year and is considered one of the most talented rappers in the game. His verse on Big Sean’s “Control” was the most significant verse Lamar had done during the year. In this verse, he called out the industries hottest rappers, many who he’s teamed up with before, and caused an uprising in the rap game. Rappers responded for weeks after the verse was released, some respecting him and some hating on him.
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis beat out Lamar in three categories, going home with four Grammy’s total. What was the most shocking part of the night, though, happened after the ceremony ended. Macklemore instagrammed a picture of a text he sent to Lamar, claiming the rapper got robbed and that he wanted Lamar to win.
The caption of the post read, “My text to Kendrick after the show. He deserved best rap album…I’m honored and completely blown away to win anything much less 4 Grammys. But in that category, he should have won IMO. And that’s taking nothing away from The Heist. Just giving GKMC it’s proper respect.”
Even though Lamar didn’t go home with any Grammy awards, it seems his performance and album is still getting the recognition they deserve. As a first time nominee, Lamar should have won something, but we all know he’ll continue to remain the best rapper in the game. Can’t wait to see what he has in store for us in 2014.
