Justin Timberlake's '20/20 Experience' overlooked for Album of the Year

2013 was the year of the Justin Timberlake takeover. After seven years, Timberlake finally released new music and took back his place as one of pop’s biggest artists. So why was The 20/20 Experience not nominated for Album of the Year at the 2014 Grammys?

Beginning in January, He released the lead single, “Suit & Tie,” off the two-part album The 20/20 Experience. Part One was released in March of that year. It sold over 900,000 copies in its first week, giving him his best debut for his career. The two-part album went on to become the best selling album of 2013.

In September, he released Part Two to complete the album experience. The problem with the second half of the album is that his lead single, “Take Back the Night” was not as strong as his other singles, giving it less airplay and fewer sales. Not to mention the somewhat darker take on Part Two was a little confusing, as it did not coincide with Part One.

The Recording Academy considered both halves of The 20/20 Experience as one album, so that might be a reason as to why the album was overlooked. It was, however, nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album, but considering how much attention, work and time went into the making of the LP, it does not do justice for not being considered for the top honor of the night.

Though the second half of 20/20 was subpar, the album as a whole exceeded expectations. Luckily for Timberlake, he is still nominated for seven awards, including two for Jay-Z’s song, “Holy Grail.”
