1) Madame George - One of the most powerful songs ever written or performed. It’s about leaving people behind, it’s about growing up and becoming cold, it’s about cutting yourself off from a certain type of innocent joy and fellowship. It’s safe to assume it’s about a drag queen, an unbearably gentle, and compassionate and generous drag queen, and the crowd she hangs out with. And the narrators last final rejection of that life and of the truly good, the truly innocent, the truly gentle Madame George. Taking place on that same existentially fraught Cyprus Avenue, where the purest are in sight, where the purest are out of reach, where the purest are abandoned. But the moment of rejection is brought here to such epic and meaningful extremes that the tragedy of it is fully put forth, and thus the tribute to Madame George is ringing and absolute.
