The Wanted — 'Word of Mouth' Album Review

The Wanted’s third record, Word of Mouth, has finally made its way into fans’ hands after two years of writing and production. After the likes of mega hit “Glad You Came” and debut triumph with “All Time Low,” it would seem like the five-man band could only go downhill after their worldwide success. However, this latest record is riddled with future radio hits throughout and can ache any listener’s sweet tooth.

Word of Mouth manages to be a big ball of energy that’s heavy with pop-friendly addiction. Already having made its way into the music universe last year, “I Found You” is still one of the group’s most prominent tracks and unleashes the not-so-secret weapon of Nathan Sykes’ extensive vocals. Then there’s other obsessive-inducing tracks like “Running out of Reasons,” with Tom Parker’s slightly rugged voice being just the touch the song needs.

Though much of this record is on a pop-highway streamline of buoyant beats, there’s plenty of ballads to please the masses, too. Arguably their finest harmonious performance, “Show Me Love (America)” could put a professional choir to shame. Never failing to incorporate a violin or two, the first few seconds nearly outshine the rest of the song until The Wanted remind every skeptic just how great their voices accent a backing orchestra.

Touching base with nearly every medium of just-sappy-enough lyrics, “Heartbreak Story” is yet another track on a growing list that fights for the top spot on any lovesick playlist. Imagine a handsome prince waiting at the doorstep with the exception of it being five chivalrous boys singing about offering their hand to a brokenhearted gal.

If you’re not having a good time at some point when listening to this record, you’re missing out. For every variety of taste, there’s something for everyone to savor, whether it’s a nightclub atmospheric song like “Glow in the Dark” or the haunting words of a song like “Demons.” There’s nothing quite like a boy band that means business, and The Wanted did just about everything they could to make Word of Mouth seamless.
