Rihanna and UNICEF launched a new campaign today, "There for the Philippines," whose purpose is to provide immediate as well as long-term support to victims of Typhoon Haiyan. Rhianna donated $100,000 to the U.S. Fund for UNICEF to start off the fundraiser. The campaign stresses the importance of continuing to help those effected by the disaster beyond the period in which it receives the most press attention. In addition to medicines, nutrition, safe water, and other emergency supplies, money raised will be put towards reuniting children with their families and the establishment of safe spaces in which children can live, socialize, play, continue their education, and return to a general state of normalcy as soon as possible.
“Emergencies make headlines, but the recovery continues long after the news cameras leave,” said Rihanna, according to looktothestars.org. “Having been a fan and supporter of UNICEF’s work over the years, I am honored to join them in helping children who have been impacted by Typhoon Haiyan. More than five million kids in the Philippines need our help. UNICEF is there for them today, and for the long road ahead, and so am I."
On the official website of "There for the Phillippines," visitors are encouraged not only to donate to the fund, but participate in the campaign through social media as well. A link on the page allows people to retweet the message, "I’m still #ThereAfterHaiyan for the millions of children in the Philippines." Another allows individuals to download an icon which can be used as a Facebook profile picture or avatar on other websites. It's all about raising awareness.
The "What Now" singer tweeted on November 9:
