Christian Bale won an Academy Award for playing coke addict Dicky Eklund in 2010’s The Fighter. Once again, the 39-year-old Welsh-born actor is stirring up Oscar buzz for his performance in the upcoming film Out of the Furnace.
In the gritty drama, Bale teams up with Crazy Heart director Scott Cooper to play Russell Baze, a steel mill worker with a terminally ill father. Casey Affleck plays Russell’s brother Rodney, a Iraq war vet who gets sucked into a crime ring and disappears. With the police of no help and nothing to lose, Russell takes the law into his own hands in order to seek vengeance for his lost brother.
The film is packed with former Oscar winners and nominees. Woody Harrelson plays the rustbelt mafia king that likely made Rodney disappear, and Forrest Whitaker stars as a powerless police officer. William Dafoe and Zoe Saldana also star in the chilling drama.
The two and a half minute long trailer is cast heavily in shadow and washed in an earthy brown haze that matches the Northeast country side. A haunting cover of Neil Young’s “Heart of Gold” whines in the background.
Moviefone notes that Cooper directed Jeff Bridges in his Oscar winning role. Maybe he could do the same for Bale in Out of the Furnace.
“Enter into the fire” when Out of the Furnace comes to theaters Dec. 6th. Check out the trailer below!
