Trailer Weekly – Disney’s ‘Frozen’

After over a decade of development and delay, Disney will finally release Frozen, an adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson’s fairytale The Snow Queen, this Thanksgiving.

Frozen tells the story of the two princess of Arendelle: Elsa (Idina Menzel) and Anna (Kristen Bell). After Elsa is unable to control her magical power to create ice and snow, she banishes herself from the kingdom, leaving it in an eternal winter.

Anna teams up with mountain man Kristoff (Jonathan Groff) in order to bring Elsa and summer back to Arendelle. In typical Disney fashion, Anna and Kristoff have two sidekicks, a reindeer and a snowman, who accompany them on their adventure.

After seeing a 20 minute excerpt of the film, Indie Wire is calling Frozen “a fresh take on the Disney fairy tale and the clear Oscar frontrunner.”

Originally intended as a follow up to Disney’s hand-drawn The Princess and the Frog, Frozen is now a punchy CG animated film that will premiere in 3D. From its giant-eyed princesses to its one word title, Frozen more resembles 2010’s Tangled. This switch isn’t surprising, since Tangled earned over $300 million more than The Princess and the Frog.

In the latest trailer, audiences get a glimpse of Elsa’s snowmaking powers. The soon-to-be queen urges to herself, “Get it together. Control it!” before sharp icicles burst from her palms.

The magical ice Elsa produces as well as the snowy landscapes that dominate the trailer are majestic. Art Director Michael Giaimo traveled all the way to Norway to find inspiration for the film’s scenery.
