Top 10 Reasons to watch 'Ravenswood'

Ravenswood is a new ABC Family original series. The supernatural drama is a spin-off of the popular Pretty Little Liars and the creation was announced in March of 2013. The new show pilot was on Oct. 22 and was shown after the Pretty Little Liars Halloween special.

The show was created by producers of Pretty Little Liars, I .Marlene King, Oliver Goldstick, Joseph Doughtery and Lesile Morgenstein. ABC Family President Michael Riley stated that Ravenswood would be “must-tweet-TV” and would be “brand-defining” for the network.

While marketing for the new show, ABC Family didn’t release plot details. Before the pilot, Spencer and Toby visited the town of Ravenswood on an episode of Pretty Little Liars but it was never explained what the TV show would be about.

Since the first episode, viewers have learned that the show will follow five teens as they try to escape a curse. Read the recap here. The curse threatens the lives of those teens as they try to escape it.

While the show is new, it shows promise. Below are top ten reasons why you need to give Ravenswood a chance.

10. It is something fresh

While Ravenswood is Final Destination meets American Horror Story, it is something that is very different than the normal ABC Family show. Ravenswood teases into the horror category, something that has yet to be explored on ABC Family.

Along with having a fresh tone, Ravenswood doesn’t really seem to focus on the major romances that the other ABC Family shows do. There is no real forbidden love (Pretty Little Liars), no pregnancies (Secret Life of the American Teenager), no language barriers (Switched at Birth) and, for now, no gymnastics duels (Make it or Break it). It is just teens trying to survive. I’m sure there will be some coupling involved and there will be lots of family drama but it seems as if the show will simply focus on surviving.

9. The new couples

I know, I know. I said above that Ravenswood is about more than romance. And that is true. However, there will have to be some relationship drama. It will be interesting to see if Caleb and Miranda get together. And, if Luke and Remy get their relationship together. #TeamLemy

8. It is ABC Family’s first spinoff

Have no fear, you don’t have to watch Pretty Little Liars to understand what is happening in Ravenswood. (But why aren’t you watching? Pretty Little Liars is amazing!) While it is a spin-off, the only real connection is Caleb and he is already a mystery.

Because it is a spinoff of the popular Pretty Little Liars, Ravenswood has to be extra unique to keep from being compared to its original show.
Unlike Pretty Little Liars, Ravenswood isn’t as clothes and fashion obsessed. It is less girly. Now, I’m not saying that the characters don’t dress fashion forward, but makeup and lipstick aren’t plot devices.

7. The Cast

The cast seems to be made up of some pretty cool people. Tyler Blackburn plays Caleb, a foster child lost up in the curse. Nicole Anderson (of ABC Family’s Make it or Break it) plays the feisty and independent Miranda. Bret Dier plays Luke Matherson, the son of an accused murderer and former coolest kid in school. Merritt Patterson plays Olivia Matherson, Luke’s twin sister, and prom queen who got Carrie’d. And Britne Oldford plays Remy Beaumont plays the daughter of a journalist who starves for the truth.

6. Family Drama

From what we learned from the pilot, there is quite a bit of family drama. There is a mother that may or may not have murdered her husband. There is sibling anger. There is a crumbling marriage. There is no lacking of family drama in Ravenswood. There is even a creepy uncle!

5. Tyler Blackburn

We could talk about how good of an actor he is. Or we could say that Caleb is such a mysterious character. Or we could talk about just how cute Blackburn is because he’s pretty darn cute. In the pilot episode he took a bath (because Ravenswood doesn’t have showers?) and, like I said, he’s pretty steamy.

4. The cliffhangers

In the first episode, there was already enough OMG moments to drive a girl crazy. However, it seems as if Ravenswood will be full of them. The pilot ended with the five main characters in a car sinking to the bottom of the river.

3. The mystery of the curse

The town of Ravenswood has a curse that, once a hero returns home from war after their entire troop dies, five teens will die. It seems as if, in Ravenswood, the five teens are Miranda, Caleb, Remy, Luke and Olivia. It will be interesting to see if the curse will get to any of them.

2. It is actually pretty scary

I may or may not have considered sleeping with the lights on after watching it. Ravenswood has your typical creepy shadow, monster hand, and hairs stick up on your arms vibe. It isn’t American Horror Story, it is pretty scary for a show that comes on at 8pm. In the pilot alone, Caleb was almost drowned in the bathtub. And, five teens were in a car accident where they were locked in the car as it floated to the bottom of the river.

In true scary movie fashion, the characters also have really dumb moments. For example, when three teens were driving in the car in the rain, trying to reach an old bridge, they were talking about the curse where five teens died in horrible accidents. Naturally, when the three teens pass two teens walking across the road, they let them into the car. Seriously guys, if five teens die, don’t travel in groups of five!

1. To occupy our time before the winter premiere of Pretty Little Liars

Face it, we all know the real reason people even started watching Ravenswood. We all watched to have a little Pretty Little Liars in our lives before the second part of the season comes back on. Ravenswood. And, Ravenswood will give a little bit of hype for the next part of Pretty Little Liars. And, it will be interesting to see if any of the pretty little liars or Ali visit Ravenswood. Ravenswood may not be Pretty Little Liars but it is worth watching.

Pretty Little Liars doesn’t come back until January and the viewers need something to hold its place. Ravenswood is perfect for that. Sure, it won’t tell the viewers if Ezra is bad or who Alison is afraid of but, Ravenswood is from the creators of Pretty Little Liars so

Ravenswood shows on Tuesdays at 8pm on ABC Family. Also, be sure to check back to TheCelebrityCafe.com for recaps.
