This Week in Comedy: Kenan Thompson, 'The Golden Globes,' and 'YLVIS'

Comedy is drowned in controversy this week as Kenan Thompson explains he no longer plans to participate in sketches where featured as a black female icon. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler take on the Golden Globes like no one before, and Jimmy Fallon goes yippy for YLVIS.

After a successful reunion with her former players hosting the season 39 premiere of Saturday Night Live, Tina Fey, is ready for more with co-host, Amy Poehler. On Tuesday morning, The Golden Globes announced the dynamic duo as the reigning hosts for the 2014 AND 2015 award shows. Detailed information can be found here.
Not much of a surprise when, on the Emmys red carpet, Fey happily revealed the NBC invitation and told E! News, ""We're going to talk about it tonight!"

Looking forward to Kenan Thompson performing sketch comedy this season on SNL? Don’t expect Maya Angelou to grace the stage. Thompson is less than thrilled because this is the sixth year in a row since a black female comedienne has joined the cast. Maya Rudolph, who left in 2007, was the last.
And for Thompson, that is reason enough to defer any involvement with satirical sketches surrounding a black iconic woman. More coverage can be found, here.
When asked why the show’s casting lacked the presence of black female comedians, the seasoned actor, who got an early start on the Nickelodeon sketch comedy show, All That reported a lack of talent. “It’s just a tough part of the business,” Thomspon explains to TVGuide.com. “Like in auditions, they just never find ones that are ready.”

This may be true, but much easier for Thompson to say considering his own preparedness for the SNL stage landing his own show with former co-star Kel Mitchell in the 1996 Nickelodeon comedy, Kenan & Kel followed by the television series' big screen counterpart, Goodburger.

SNL casting focuses talent searches on comedy groups such as 'The Groundlings' and 'The Second City'.

With sketch comedy’s most talked about talent migrating to platforms like YouTube and FunnyOrDie.com it is a shame SNL casting hasn’t caught up to the trends in entertainment.

However, that isn’t keeping famed veteran, Jimmy Fallon from embracing the digital sensations. On Tuesday, Fallon debuted YouTube’s up and coming, YLVIS on his show Late Night with Jimmy Fallon by lending his set for their live music video performance.

New members of Saturday Night Live might need some lessons from these Norwegian comedians.
