Things changed this week on The Mindy Project. Everything from Mindy’s hairstyle to her relationship status is different, but don’t worry we’ll get through it together. Let’s jump right in!
Casey returned from Haiti a changed man, but not in the spiritual way you would expect. Instead, he decided to leave his ministry behind and pursue a career as a DJ, becoming DJ Sacrament. Yeah, let’s let that sink in for a second...
After a few weeks of being what Morgan called a “house husband,” Casey gets a gig at a music festival in upstate New York. The entire office, besides Jeremy and Tamara, decide to go too, and suddenly, Morgan and Casey are beat-boxing on a train headed towards the festival. I’m no musical expert, but their beats sounded more like flatulence than music.
In an effort to stay positive, Mindy says, “DJing is the number one growing job... for kids of celebrities.”
At the festival, Mindy is greeted by the sweat of a large man’s fat roll and a gang of hula hoopers. If there ever was a place that was not Mindy’s scene, this hot, outdoor, eccentric music festival is it. Casey reminds her that they’ll constantly have to attend these kinds of events if he wants to become a DJ. Mindy looks the opposite of thrilled.
Before we get too deep into the crumbling romance of Mindy and Casey, let’s check back in with the practice.
The morning before everyone left for the festival, Peter Prentiss (Adam Pally from Happy Endings) stopped in to interview for the open doctor position. Peter’s interviewing skills, however, are a bit off. Peter, a former frat star, boasts that he’s penned something called the Hippocratic Broath. He reveals that he was fired from his last job, because he had sex with a tree. Then to make matters worse, he mistakes Mindy for for a nurse, a doula, a manicurist, and a plus-sized model before realizing she’s a doctor in the practice. Shockingly, he didn’t get the job.
Back in upstate New York, Mindy and Casey get in a fight when Mindy brings up the very valid point that not every hobby needs to be a job. I mean I love playing Candy Crush in my spare time, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to pursue it professionally! Casey, however, doesn’t see it as a hobby but as his path set out by God. He leaves angry to go play his set.
After eating a cupcake from a stranger, Morgan accidentally gets stoned and cannonballs into a grassy field. To be fair, he thought the green icing on the top of the cupcake was a four leaf clover — precious. Mindy and Danny take Morgan and his bruised backside to the medical tent, which is overwhelmed with high and injured festival goers.
Danny and Mindy stay to help, which could case Mindy to miss Casey’s show. Once again, Danny steps in to give Mindy a much needed pep talk. He tells her that since he’s her fiancé, she has to support him. His advice is solid but not particularly eloquent. Danny tells Mindy, “Don’t be a dick,” and she runs to watch Casey’s show.
Meanwhile, Jeremy is swamped managing the practice by himself. Two patients go into labor at the same time, so Jeremy is forced to ask for Peter’s help. Not only does Peter successfully deliver one of the babies on his own, but he also assists Jeremy’s delivery by calming down a nervous father. Jeremy, feeling abandoned by his fellow doctors, hires Peter despite his earlier interview. Is it just me or is this the exact same way Morgan was hired in the second episode?
Mindy arrives at Casey’s shows just as it’s starting. He opens his set the only way a former minster could. His voice booms over the microphone, “Let there be DANCE.” Casey sees Mindy in the audience and enlists the crowd to help body surf her to the front. It was hilarious and terrifying all at the same time.
After Casey’s set, Mindy’s 100% onboard with Casey’s DJ career. Mindy apologizes for doubting him before, since his show was amazing. Casey then pops her balloon of support and tells her that he doesn’t want to be a DJ anymore. Instead, he wants to pursue event planning. Cue Mindy downing an entire glass of wine.
Danny is still stuck in the medical tent. Making Mindy leave to see Casey meant he missed the concert of his favorite band, The National. Morgan, in one of the sweetest and ill-advised gestures, brings The National to Danny, but there’s a catch. Morgan only got The National to meet Danny, because he convinced the band that the two are a couple and he wanted to propose. Morgan drops to one knee. Danny, of course, is visibly uncomfortable but goes along with it. Then The National plays for the (fake) happy couple.
Speaking of couples, Mindy and Casey are back in New York. Casey says he’s serious about event planning and asks Mindy to move to Austin, Texas, so he could go to event planning school. Mindy just looks irritated and exhausted.
Casey tries to reassure her by saying that he feels this is God’s plan for him. Mindy responds with, “Sometimes I feel like, when God is telling you to change everything, there’s a little part of you that’s talking too.” The two decide to break up, Mindy gives back the ring, and after closing the door behind Casey starts to sob.
No, it’s not the happiest end to a show, but I do think their break up was inevitable and or the best. What do you think? How will Mindy cope after the end of her engagement? Does this mean her and Danny may have a shot? And, on a lighter note, are you happy her hair is finally growing out?
