Taylor Swift has done it again!
“Sweeter than Fiction” isn’t about broken hearts, boyfriends or cheating. It is a sweet, uplifting, song written to accompany the film One Chance. While it isn’t typical Swift song, it has charm that makes it stand up to some of her other hits.
Even though the listener doesn’t get to play the “who is this about” game, the bubbly beat and simple lyrics make up for it. The message of the song is Swift rooting someone on as they accomplish their goal. With lyrics like, “I’ll be one of the many saying/You made us proud/you made us proud,” the song becomes less about Swift herself, rather the feeling of having someone you love succeed.
The single has catchy lyrics and can be danced to- something Swift is good at producing. It even has a bit of eighties flare in it. She truly shows her colors as a pop princess with spirited and bouncy beat and adorable lyrics about achieving dreams. Lines such as “And in this perfect weather/It’s like we don’t remember/The rain we thought would last forever and ever” are perfect for dancing and singing on one of those bad days.
However, comparing “Sweeter than Fiction” to Swift’s most recent album, Red, it is clearly not a work of art. While “Sweeter than Fiction” is a great tune, lyrically speaking, it seems juvenile compared to her heartbreaking song, “All Too Well” or even the uplifting “Mean” from Swift’s third album, Speak Now. But, if you take “Sweeter Than Fiction” as a standalone and don’t compare it to any of Swift’s other hits, then it is a charming little song.
“Sweeter Than Fiction” is available on Amazon and iTunes and can be heard in the film One Chance. Also, it will be playing nonstop on the radio for the next six months.
