I hope you’ve been tuning in to Sons of Anarchy. Life has been overly chaotic, especially since those Irish blew up the beloved clubhouse. The clubhouse has moved onto sweeter prospects, as it finds its new home at an old ice cream shop. Instead of freezers full of ice cream deliciousness, they’re now full of alcohol goodness.
Last week’s “Salvage” ended the mysterious solo journey Bobby was on. He’s back with a few more men to fill out the ranks. Good thing, since their numbers have been depleting as of late. I must admit, I was a bit on edge about what exactly Bobby was up to. Shame on me. I should have believed in his love for the club and Jax. “Sweet and Vaded” starts with the club moving into their home away from home and patching in Bobby’s recruits and Ratboy.
Finally, Tara’s scheming is making sense. Watching her fake a miscarriage and blame Gemma was upsetting and disturbing. I realize she’s doing what she has to do in order to find a safe exit for her children, but I am hating every minute of it. I just want to pull a Gemma and grab her by the throat to choke some sense, or maybe decency, into her. But, let’s be clear, I’m only hating the character decisions. I’m absolutely loving how the plot is twisting and turning as it unfolds, even if it’s completely gut wrenching. My heart breaks for Jax.
Venus/Vincent, played by Walton Goggins, is in desperate need of help. Helping Venus drives quite a bit of “Sweet and Vaded”. The most interesting part for me is the chivalrous attitude of the club that peaks through every now and then. Tig’s compassionate reaction to Venus’ predicament is quite endearing.
For me, the standout scene in “Sweet and Vaded” is after the guys have located Venus/Vincent’s son Joey and Alice. Alice runs a child porn ring dating back to when Venus was young. Jax tells Alice to leave, but she refuses to leave until she’s spewed her hateful words. Alice begins berating Venus about telling Joey she is his father. She viciously tells Venus, “You don’t deserve a son.” As she goes on with her rant, the camera focuses on Jax’s reaction as he becomes visibly upset by her words. She continues, “You go ahead. You tell that sweet boy all about his daddy. How much you love him, want the best for him. It won’t matter because when he finds out what you are, he’s gonna grow up hating you. Hating your lies. Hating the life you forced him into and hating himself. This boy’s gonna blow his brains out before his balls completely drop. Not ‘cause of me or his dead momma, but because of you. The awful thing that turned out to be his fath…” Her sentence abruptly ends as Jax shoots her in the head. Obviously, Jax was taking her words to heart. Her words had a close resonance to his own life. Alice’s twisted rant forced Jax face-to-face with the truth he’s been trying to escape. His decisions are and will directly affect the life of his children and loved ones. Her rant epitomized the internal torment Jax has been faced with since season one. Astounding performances. Remarkable writing.
The best way to describe my feelings is by quoting the previews for the next episode. Unser says to Tara, “It breaks my heart that you had to become something so wrong.” That coupled with the “God if you can hear this, crash this train” lyrics at the end of the episode signal a rather ominous future. It seems as though things are going to get a lot messier before it gets any better. Lines will be crossed and people are going to pay for their previous sins. Comeuppance is the name of the game and it seems as though everyone will have to pay the proverbial piper.
Make sure you’re tuning in Tuesday nights 10/9c on FX.
