The newly crowned Miss America, who is the first winner of Indian descent, responds to racist comments

After Miss New York, Nina Davuluri, was crowned Miss America 2014 Sunday night, social media was abuzz with insults about her Indian ethnicity.

Some tweets collected by Buzzfeed read:
“How the f--- does a foreigner win Miss America? #idiots”
“Miss New York is an Indian.. With all do respect, this is America”
“#MissAmerica ummm wtf?! Have we forgotten 9/11?”
and
“So miss america is a terrorist”

Davuluri is from Fayetteville, New York. She said, “I always viewed myself as first and foremost American,” according to USA Today.

Davuluri is both proud to be an American and proud of her Indian heritage. Davuluri performed a Bollywood dance as her talent for the pageant, and she hopes to promote diversity as the new Miss America.

“I'm so happy this organization has embraced diversity," Davuluri said of the pageant. "I'm thankful there are children watching at home who can finally relate to a new Miss America.”

As for those who have made racist insults and doubt her authenticity as an America role model, Davuluri simply said, “I have to rise above that.”
