Amy Yakima and Fik-Shun were crowned America's Favorite Dancers in last night's So You Think You Can Dance finale.
The pair, who began Season 10's top 20 as partners, won over tap dancer Aaron Turner and contemporary dancer Jasmine Harper. According to the Wall Street Journal, this is the second season to have both a male and a female winner – before that, only one dancer was deemed champion.
19-year-old Yakima was thankful to win – and she didn't expect to come out on top of Harper. After the show, she discussed how incredible of a dancer her competition is. “Jasmine has the longest legs possible, and she’s like the humblest person I’ve ever met,” Yakima revealed to Entertainment Weekly. “It felt really amazing to be dancing with that type of person at the end.”
The Detroit girl has big dreams. “I’d love to do music videos, do tours, do little performances anywhere. Just to be able to dance is what I wanna do. If I can use dance as a career, I’m gonna do that, no matter what it is.” As the Season 10 female winner, doors are sure to open for her everywhere.
Dushaunt “Fik-Shun” Stegall, also 19, never thought he would be dubbed America's Favorite Dancer. “I’m just soooooooo, so happy,” he said. “Honestly, I was expecting to be second, because I was in the bottom once. A lot of things went through my head…but at the end of the day, I put it all on the dance floor.”
The Las Vegas street performer has come a long way from day one – he's transformed into a great all-around dancer and a talented partner. When it comes to his future aspirations, he said he would love to be “constantly doing commercial work, movies, live shows. Just any role where I can shine a little bit and people can connect, but on just a bigger scale. That would be awesome.”
Yakima and Fik-Shun have been a dream team since the beginning. Of their winning partnership, Fik-Shun said, “Yeahhhhh, like, that psyched me out. To think that from day one, when we got partnered up, that we would make it all the way? I was just, like, in shock. I’m so, so happy we had that.”
The judges for the finale included Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy, Paula Abdul, Adam Shankman and tWitch. There were many repeat dances from throughout the season, including judges' picks, finalist picks and video flash backs from special moments early on in the season.
Executive Producer and judge Lythgoe also announced during the finale that the show has been approved for an 11th season.
