What a perfect time of the year to debut Sleepy Hollow. A traditional ghost story told to trick-or-treaters, comes to life in the form of a drama/detective/horror television series on Fox.
The series comes from Washington Irving’s tale of a boyish school teacher who takes off the head of a man who continues to plague the 21st century.
In the series adaption, Ichabod Crane is introduced as a member of President George Washington’s army and during his duty, he cuts off the head (thus killing) an unknown soldier. Unfortunately, time is twisted and Ichabod wakes up to find himself in unknown territory, in New York in the 21st century (don’t you just hate when that happens!)
But lo and behold, the headless mysterious soldier has made his way to New York as well and has been causing havoc and distress long before Crane wakes. Crane is charged for these crimes by lead officer Lt. Abbie Mills, who after some deep discussion, begins to believe the dark tale herself.
It’s a cool story, set in a modern day scenario. Picture Once Upon A Time without the fairytales and witches. It’s the perfect introduction to fall and I seemed to be hooked on the series. It’s not every day that folklore is turned into a modern day crime drama and perhaps even a romance (why not?).
The episode starts in the middle of a Revolutionary War battle, where the main character, we soon find out is battling a masked soldier. After the fight with the masked man, Ichabod Crane passes out and when he awakes he is inside of a cave, covered in what appears to be icy snow.
When he wakes up, there is initial panic and Ichabod runs out of the cave into the road where he is gently hit by the second car. It's pretty rough.
Elsewhere in the town, one man has lost his battle with the headless horseman. The episode is filled with multiple flashbacks which help give light to Ichabod’s time before he arrived in the 21st century. There is a influential flashback involving Ichabod, his wife who it turns out is actually a witch and a priest, who is immortal, but later dies.
A bible is involved in this scene and when Ichabod wakes up in present day, he has the bible which is flipped exactly to the Book of Revelation and Ichabod concludes that the Headless Horseman is actually the First Horseman of the Apocalypse, instead of just a menacing fiend, like the folklore we all grew up on. It's all in a days work.
The town is just as haunted and there is a flashback to Lt. Abbie as a child having an experience that can only be concluded as part of this apocalyptic foreshadowing. The bible is going to be extremely important and it seems that all of the answers lie in George Washington’s bible.
The show is about the balance of good and evil between real characters and characters that never seem to die. Ichabod’s wife appears as a good witch who is trying to stop the world from ending, but she is dealing with darker magic from witches who want the world to end.
This episode was full of facts and drama, so let’s see if this can continue on for the rest of the season.
I personally can’t wait to see how Crane fits into the 21st century in a world filled with international war and Apple products. But a girl can dream.
