iPhone 5C may not be as cheap for China as Apple hopes

Apple hopes that its new phone, the iPhone 5C, will help the company break into China’s massive cellphone market, but the phone’s high cost could drive potential customers away.

On Tuesday, Apple introduced the iPhone 5C, a colorful alternative to the iPhone 5S. Apple has struggled to compete against low-cost phones in China, and branded the iPhone 5C as a cheaper, more accessible phone for the Chinese market.

Apple listed the price of an iPhone 5C at 4,477 renminbi, or $733, however the newly announced iPhone 5S, will start at a similar price of 5,288 renminbi, or $864. According to The New York Times the price of an iPhone 5C is 33 percent higher in China than the full price for the same phone in the U.S.

Chinese cell phone carriers tend to discount their monthly bills, so there is still a possibility that the price on the phone could fall. However, after the phone’s announcement in California, stock prices of some Apple Suppliers sunk. This decline included a Taiwanese company that assembles the iPhone 5C.

Pre-order for the iPhone 5C, in the U.S. and China, will begin Sept. 18th.
