Hawaiian woman’s surname too long to fit on license

Janice "Lokelani" Keihanaikukauakahihuliheekahaunaele is battling with Hawaii for her full last name, which contains 36 letters, to be printed accurately on her license. Authorities say the name just won’t fit.

The 54-year-old woman emailed her major and city councilwoman, however the computer system for Hawaiian licenses only has room for 35 characters per name. Keihanaikukauakahihuliheekahaunaele’s name includes 35 letters plus a character from the Hawaiian alphabet, the “okina.”

She got her new license with her the last letter of her surname cut off and her first name omitted altogether.

“This is the county’s fault that I don’t have an ID that has my name correctly,” she said, according to CBS. “There’s a lot of meaning behind this name. I’ve had this name for over 20 years.”

The last name was given to Janice from her beloved late husband. Besides the meaning behind it, it is also practically difficult to having an incorrect name on a license.

She explained to NY Daily News that once a policeman pulled her over and asked for her license.

She explains, “He looked at it and he goes, ‘Well, where is your first name?’ And I said, ‘Don’t blame me. This is your department. This is the county.’”
