Families and friends alike stormed into cinemas over the weekend for the hotly anticipated sequel to 2009s smash hit Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2. While the film received generally lukewarm reviews from critic, the audience didn't seem to care as it soared over last weeks spot holder Prisoners.
According to Empire Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 made an astonishing $34 million over the opening weekend. Leaving Prisoners in the dust (but still a commendable second week) with just $10.9 million. The Joseph Gordon-Levitt directorial debut Don Jon came in fifth with a reasonable $9 million (it's reported budget was only $6 million).
The film was well received by audiences as well, according to Cinema Score the filmed has an A- which is universal acclaim. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 had a strong debut and looks like the weeks ahead should prove well for the family flick as no other animated film looks to be slated for release for some time.
