At least 13 children were injured today at Connecticut’s Norwalk Oyster Festival when a swing ride malfunctioned and fell.
According to NBC Connecticut, the ride lost power, which caused the riders to suddenly fall to the ground. At least two children have very serious injuries, along with many more minor injuries. The hurt children were transported to nearby hospitals.
One witness described the accident: “I heard to large clanks and saw the swings crashing in to the center of the ride.” Another witness said the "ride just abruptly stopped and kids fell off," according to to The Hour.
The Norfolk Seaport Association has released an official statement saying, “Regarding today's ride incident at the Oyster Festival, our first and only concern is for the wellbeing of those involved and their families… We are cooperating fully with the investigating authorities.”
The entire ride area at the festival has been closed in response to the accident. An investigation will be conducted at the scene by the State Marshal’s Office in order to further determine the cause of the malfunction.
