This first episode of the season really shows how different everything in Atlantic City, New York, and Chicago has become. All your favorite and not so favorite characters have changed and some have not appeared but stay tuned to see them as they may pop in and out throughout the season.
A favorite character Chalky White is handling business well and owns and operates the now Onyx Club, formerly Babette's. In one of the most memorable storylines, White and his second hand man Dunn Purnsley are talking with a talent agent and his wife, trying to make a business relationship. The man named Dicky, has a wife with a bit of a nympho problem. She initiates sex with Purnsley by drawing an explicit cartoon. When they are found in the act, Dicky finds them and rips Purnsley a new one. He threatens him with a gun and calls him a n*****. He then demands that he continue with his wife so that he can pleasure himself.
Gillian is now a junkie and has resorted to prostitution to keep afloat. She is also fighting to gain custody of her grandson but her lifestyle is too wild and unfit to raise a child in so Tommy is still staying with Julia Sigorsky. Gillian is also trying to woo it seems a new character named Roy Phillips, who asks her to be his companion while he is in town.
Richard Harrow is back to being an assassin and has gone on a killing spree. We do not know the reasons for his targeting of the victims yet but we are sure he has a reason. We do get to see where he comes from a bit by the introduction to his pregnant sister, who lives in the middle of nowhere. He arrives and she is thrilled to see him as she had no idea of his whereabouts.
Al Capone is trying to make a name for himself and we see how the power of Johnny Torio has made him feel. This shows when a journalist misspells his name in the newspaper and he throws a fit. Torio however says no one should know who he is so it does not matter.
The most favorable character I saved for last because there is so much to say without giving too much away. Nucky Thompson is back and his allies are also back. He has a sit down with Lucky Luciano, Arnold Rothstein, Joe Masseria who now works with Luciano strictly. They seem to be on decent terms and the meeting is held at the Onyx Club where Nucky seems to hold all his meetings and conducts business. He spends most of the time watching dancers rehearse and spending time with his brother's family, perhaps missing his wife and children.
He seems to be missing something he looks sad and unfulfilled in this episode until a blonde friend of Eddie Cantor catches his eye but she loses him once she says something about his beloved Billie. It seems Nucky wants to head to Florida at some point perhaps to relocate or start business down there. Stay tuned to find out.
