‘The Mindy Project’ Recap – ‘The Other Dr. L’

This week’s episode opened with Mindy and Casey, a web cam, and... a whipped cream one-piece. It’s just another normal week on The Mindy Project!

Mindy returned to the practice this week, only to find that her office and her name were being used by Dr. Paul Leotard, the widely grinning James Franco. While Mindy complained about her new nickname, “Big L,” Morgan led her to her new office, a.k.a the supply closet.

Yes, Mindy has been at the practice for years where as “Mr. Dr. L” has only been around for a few weeks, but after all, medical practices are businesses, and Mr. Dr. L is a good doctor who brings in patients. His other skills include, but I’m sure are not limited to: being cute, performing magic, strict dieting, and having sex with Hillary Clinton. He does have one weakness, but we’ll get to that a little later.

While the war between Ms. Dr. L and Mr. Dr. L raged on, Danny slipped out of work to go to “the post office.” In reality, the post office is the “Getting Over It Gang.” It’s a sad group of recently single guys who play basketball, including Mindy’s ex Tom and — I kid you not — Kris Humphries. The guys support each other and proudly chant the mantra, “Just because we don’t have wives doesn’t mean we don’t have lives. Single and cool! Single and cool! Single and cool!”

Jeremy finds out about Danny’s singles support group and quickly declares it very uncool.

That night the entire office headed to a bar, where Mindy finally discovers Mr. Dr. L’s weakness: he’s a lightweight. She proposes they go head to head in a “shots off.” Whoever drinks the most shots gets to keep the name Dr. L and the office.

Apparently Mindy has the tolerance of a Russian sailor, pounding back shot after shot. It amazed me as well as Mr. Dr. L and resulted in the funniest exchange of the night.

Mr. Dr. L: “How are you doing this?!”
Mindy: “I ate an entire load of bread before I came here tonight.”
Mr. Dr. L: “Oh, so you knew we were gong to do this?”
Mindy: “Nope, I just do that every night, dog.”

After enough shots that would kill a small elephant, Mindy is victorious. Her win comes with a price, she must take an incredibly drunk Mr. Dr. L back to his temporary place, Danny’s apartment. Mindy can’t find his key to get into the apartment, so she leaves him slumped in front of the door. Just before she leaves, she kisses Mr. Dr. L! And in typical Mindy fashion, she screams and runs away.

Christina later finds Mr. Dr. L when she’s returning some of Danny’s things. I don’t know why she would do this so late at night, but I digress. Christina helps Mr. Dr. L up and into the apartment, as he tells her in a slurred voice, “I’m so sorry Danny ruined your life.” This one line is all Christian needs to hear, and the two head to the bedroom.

The next day at the office Mr. Dr. L is wrecked with guilt. He tells Mindy (who is wearing the most clashing outfit I have ever seen. I know that’s sort of her thing, but my gracious, florescent orange and hot pink should not be layered) that he’s had sex with Christina. They attempt to get through the day without Danny finding out and killing Mr. Dr. L.

It doesn’t take long for Danny to realize Mr. Dr. L had sex the previous night, but he thinks it’s with Mindy. She goes along with it for a bit, which I thought was strange. Doesn’t she care more about her friend Danny knowing the truth than protecting her new enemy?

Their pretend tryst only lasts a minute though, because Mr. Dr. L confesses. Without missing a beat, Danny punches him square in the face. My own nose was in pain from hearing the impact of his punch.

Since Mr. Dr. L is such an asset to the practice, Jeremy refuses to fire him, and Danny quits and storms out.

Mindy finds him with the Getting Over It Gang and urges him to come back. Danny refuses, saying that he’s now with his true friends. Miraculously, Kris Humphries steps up and gives Danny a pep talk about how to get over you ex-wife, which ended in a hilarious hug between one 6’9” tall man and another 5’9” tall man. Kris made Danny look like a child, but he got Danny to go back to the practice. Who knew a man that once was married to a Kardashian could give such good relationship advice?

Even with Danny’s return, Mr. Dr. L resigned for his actions, and the episode ended with a final shot of Mindy sitting in her rightful office. And as quickly as he entered into our lives, Mr. Dr. L is gone.

So what did you think of the episode? Were you as surprised as I was with Kris Humphries’ cameo? Were you shocked that an engaged Mindy kissed Mr. Dr. L? Do you think Casey will find out? Comment below!
