Jennifer Mee, who first gained media attention for her uncontrollable hiccups, was found guilty of first-degree murder Friday. Mee sobbed as the verdict was read, and she was led to a jail cell.
According to CNN, Mee lured Shannon Griffin, a 22-year-old man she met on a social networking site, to a vacant home in Florida. Mee then brought Griffin to the back of the house where two armed men, Laron Raiford and Lamont Newton, waited. Griffin was shot multiple times with a .38-caliber revolver and died.
Mee was sentenced to life in prison without parole, although police recognized she did not pull the trigger. Last month Raiford was sentenced to life in prison, however Newton has yet to go to trial.
CBS News reports that Mee’s attorneys say the 22-year-old Mee suffered from schizophrenia and Tourette’s Syndrome. A court psychiatrist deemed her intelligence was “low normal.”
Mee first came into the public spotlight when she developed a case of the hiccups lasting more than a month. A then 15-year-old Mee appeared on multiple TV shows, including NBC’s Today show, where she was dubbed the “Hiccup Girl.”
During her murder trial, Mee hiccups returned briefly.
