The July 30, 2013 episode of the Daily Show focuses on interesting court cases, the Pope’s recent statement about homosexuality, and Tim Gunn.
The first segment of the episode is John Oliver playing the part of tv judge, Judge Johnny Oliver. Jason Jones announces him. The first case is Halliburton corperation’s being accused on hiding evidence that the BP spill could have been predicted, and Halliburton destroyed relevant evidence. Halliburton agreed to plead guilty to the destruction of evidence, and to pay the maximum fine. The max fine is $200,000. However, Halliburton decided to pay $55 million to a fish and wildlife foundation that was not required by the court.
The second court case is Lance Armstrong vs. the U.S. Postal Service. The Postal Service is suing Armstrong because Armstrong was doping while the Postal Service was sponsoring him. Armstrong argues, according to Oliver, that they should have known.
The final case was about a man illegally discharging his shotgun and blaming Vice President Joe Biden. The defendant shot the gun into the air in order to scare something or someone off. His defense is that Biden said that was the appropriate response. Oliver showed a clip of him saying exactly that.
The second segment reported on Pope Francis’ statement about his stance on homosexuality. He was quoted as saying that, as long as people try to be good, who is he to judge. Oliver throws to Aasif Mandvi at the Vatican. Mandvi is having a raging party to celebrate the news. Oliver then plays a clip of Cardinal Timothy Dolan saying that the Church’s stance has not changed. Being homosexual is not a sin, but homosexual acts are sins. According to the cardinal, this statement is not a change of rules, but a change in tone.
Tim Gunn from Project Runway was the guest. Oliver asked him how he felt about the Vatican’s “change in tone.” They also discussed how huge of a fan Oliver is of Project Runway. They had some interesting discussion about the show. If you are a fan, definitely give the interview a watch.
