'The Daily Show' recap 8/13/13: Stop and Frisk, Raisin Shenanigans, and 'The Act of Killing'

The August 13, 2013 episode of the Daily Show covers stop and frisk in NYC, illegal raisin activities, and The Act of Killing.

The episode begins with John Oliver introducing the stop and frisk policy. The definition of stop and frisk provided on the CNN clip was “A person is temporarily detained on the street against his or her will for purposed of questioning.” The statistics of who is subjected to this policy show that it is mainly minority groups. Fifty-two percent are Black and 31% are Hispanic. Only 6% of these stops lead to any type of arrest. Recently a New York City judged ruled stop and frisk unconstitutional. However, she did not call for it to stop, but just to be changed. Mayor Michael Bloomberg has said that this case was unfair.

Jessica Williams covers this story. She says that stop and frisk does not go far enough. She is reporting from the most crime riddled street in New York, Wall Street. She wants the police to start frisking the people who match the typical description of a white collar criminal. Oliver points out that this is unfair profiling. It was a really funny turnaround on the topic.

The second segment is a special report from Jason Jones. The government is investigating a farmer in California. He has refused to allow the government take some of his crop for the strategic reserve (meant to control the prices on products). He owes them around $1.5 million. Some raisin farmers took a case to the Supreme Court, where they decided it was not an issue on which they needed to rule.

The guest in this episode is Joshua Oppenheimer promoting The Act of Killing. In Indonesia a few decade ago, there was a violent take over and part of it was mass killings. This group is still in charge. Oppenheimer went to talk to the people who participated in these killings and see how they talk about them. They are not apologetic, and tend to boast about it. The movie looks at how they boast and how they justify what they did.
