San Diego Mayor Bob Filner leaves therapy early

San Diego Mayor Bob Filner began intensive therapy for sexually harassing women on Monday, August fifth; he was scheduled to complete two weeks in the program, as he promised to the public in a statement three weeks ago. He left Saturday instead, as accusations from 14 women, including military sexual assault survivors, have piled up.

According to a statement from his office, Filner will continue therapy on an outpatient basis, but is unavailable for the week because he is taking “personal time.” Since Filner’s former press secretary Irene McCormack Jackson first came forward, Californians have become increasingly displeased with the mayor, writes Reuters. The entire city council and the San Diego County Democratic Party have asked him to resign, while his political opponents have launched a recall campaign.

The most recent attack came from California Senator Barbara Boxer, reacting to the news that the most recent women to come forward were survivors of sexual assault in the military. In an open letter, Boxer wrote that “The latest revelations regarding your behavior toward women recovering from sexual assault … have shaken me to my core. ... You should step down immediately.” Filner’s tactics purportedly ranged from groping to demanding dates in return for action from his office, Fox News reports.
