The Man of Steel sequel that is coming in the summer of 2015 has Ben Affleck starring as Batman. The film is suppose to take two of the most famous superheroes and pin them against one another. The announcement that the two heroes would fight each other came at Comic-Con in July.
NBC News reports that Zack Snyder told the Comic-Con audience, "it’s beyond mythological to have Superman and our new Batman facing off, since they are the greatest superheroes in the world."
According to NBC News Warner Bros. is very excited for the film and its direction. Warner Bros. released this statement:
"Affleck and filmmaker Zack Snyder will create an entirely new incarnation of the character in Snyder’s as-yet-untitled project — bringing Batman and Superman together for the first time on the big screen and continuing the director’s vision of their universe, which he established in 'Man of Steel.'"
Snyder in a studio statement also said that, “Ben provides an interesting counterbalance to Henry’s Superman." Greg Silverman, Warner Bros. president for creative development and worldwide production said, “We knew we needed an extraordinary actor to take on one of DC Comics’ most enduringly popular superheroes, and Ben Affleck certainly fits that bill, and then some."
As much as Warner Bros. and Zack Snyder are excited about Affleck there is some reservations in the media about it. In an article by Michael Calia from the The Wall Street journal there is some concerns about Affleck as Batman. He stated that Affleck is too perfect, and perhaps too much of a brooding jock figure. He explains that Affleck has a history of successfully portraying "haunted leading characters," but he might be an "uninspired" choice for the role.
Whatever the hype, we will only know if Ben Affleck can rise to the occasion and portray a convincing Batman once we have all seen the film in the Summer of 2015. Until then we will have to keep and ear to the ground and hope for some teasers.
