‘Teen Wolf’ recap: ‘The Overlooked’

In Teen Wolf’s “The Overlooked,” chaos rules as the gang tries to protect the Darach from the Alpha pack in order to saved loved ones.

A storm is blowing through Beacon Hills hospital at the beginning of “The Overlooked.” Melissa McCall is working on getting the patients safely to another hospital during the storm. She finds out Cora hasn’t been moved and meets Peter in her room. Cora is still very sick and vomits a black substance (like Gerard) and mistletoe.

At Derek’s loft, Jennifer Blake arrives and tries to tell him she’s not an evil druid. Unfortunately for her, Stiles and Scott beat her to the loft. Stiles asks her where his dad is, and she continues to try and get Derek to believe her instead of the teens. Derek seems to believe Scott and Stiles, but hesitates until Scott blows mistletoe on Jennifer and everyone then sees her Darach face. Derek is ready to harm her, but backs off when she says without her, Cora will die and they won’t find the Sheriff.

On the way to the hospital to see Cora, Jennifer tells Derek she wants to help them save Cora. Stiles tells Scott Jennifer’s acting like her plan is still working. They get the hospital, but Cora’s not in her room. The hospital has been evacuated, and they seem to be alone minus Melissa, Cora, and Peter. Unfortunately, the Alpha pack is at the hospital as well. The twins fight with Derek and Scott, while Peter and Stiles get Cora. During the fight, Jennifer gets away by jumping into the elevator. Deucalion and Kali are waiting for her when she opens the elevator doors. She uses some form of druid magic and Kali is thrown back and the doors close.

At the school, Chris, Allison, and Isaac are regrouping after the concert. Lydia is fine, but Isaac’s worried about Cora when he hears the hospital is being evacuated. He says he’s going there so she won’t be alone with Peter, and Chris tells him they’ll join him.

The Alpha twins continue trying to attack the group. Stiles attempts to help by hitting them on the head with a bat, but it just breaks. Stiles is angry and tells Derek off when he tries to tell him to be quiet. Without Jennifer, he believes both his dad and Cora will die.

Melissa is getting ready to leave the hospital when she runs into Decaulion and Kali. They kidnap her and force her to make an announcement on the intercom. Jennifer shows up right before Melissa starts speaking. She tells them she wants to help and she left to get away from the Alpha twins. Melissa speaks and says Deucalion is giving the gang ten minutes to hand Jennifer over to the Alpha pack. Jennifer tells them she will heal Cora and tell them where the Sheriff is when she’s safe from the Alpha pack. She also tells them Melissa won’t be harmed since Deucalion wants Scott, the potential True Alpha.

They try to find something to hurt the twins. Stiles picks up the defibrillator pads, but says he doesn’t know how to use them, so Derek tells him to put them down. They find epinephrine, which gives someone an adrenaline boost. Peter uses it, and he and Scott fight the twins. Meanwhile Stiles, Derek, and Jennifer take Cora to an ambulance. They get Cora in, but Kali has already killed the driver and stolen the keys. Kali calls Jennifer Julia and runs after them. Stiles shuts himself in the ambulance with Cora, while Derek and Jennifer run to an elevator.

Deucalion shuts down the power so Derek and Jennifer are stuck on the elevator. The decide not to use the emergency hatch because that would make a lot of noise, and then the pack would find them right away. The two try to decide what to do and Derek texts Scott. Scott and Peter had run away from the twins by using a laundry chute.

In the ambulance, Cora stops breathing so Stiles gives her mouth-to-mouth and she starts breathing again. He continues to talk to her while she’s unconscious about how scared he is and how he doesn’t find to find his dad’s body. Scott brings Peter to the ambulance because he’s hurt, and then he goes back to get his mom, Derek, and Jennifer.

The Alpha twins attack Scott when he gets back into the hospital. He’s saved by Melissa, who uses the defibrillator pads on the twins. She tells him Deucalion let her go.

Meanwhile, Jennifer is talking to Derek in the elevator. She talks about her Darach face to Derek and seems really focused on how grossed out he is by her face, instead of you know, the fact that she’s a murderer. She explains her real name is Julia Baccari and she was Kali’s Emissary. Kali is also telling Deucalion about Julia. Kali was supposed to kill her whole pack and her Emissary. She did attack Julia, but she left her to die in peace, instead of making sure she was dead. Jennifer explains she was able to crawl on the ground till she found the nemeton, the druid tree. She was able to hold on because of the power in the tree, given to it by a virgin sacrifice. The virgin sacrifice was Paige, the girl Derek killed when he was young. Jennifer seems to think this means the two of them have a connection.

She tells Derek a Norse myth about Baldr, Loki, and Frigg. Loki used mistletoe to kill Baldr because it was the overlooked plant. Frigg had made her son Baldr safe from everything, but forgot about mistletoe. She says Emissaries were overlooked like mistletoe was, and now is her time to show the Alpha pack she didn’t overlook their evil deeds. He tells her she killed innocent people, but she says he has as well. She tells him she can defeat the Alpha pack during the lunar eclipse, which makes the werewolves lose their power.

Scott and Melissa run into the Argents and Isaac. The group forms a plan to get Derek and Jennifer out of the elevator. Melissa’s going to turn on the power while Allison and Chris lure the Alpha pack outside. Isaac gets the car and takes Peter and Cora away. Stiles notices a form in the ambulance that has “parent or guardian” on it and realizes Jennifer is taking parents. The Sheriff and Melissa are both tied up in a cellar by the druid tree. Stiles rushes inside and pauses when he sees Derek lying in the elevator, Jennifer nowhere around, and then runs after Scott.

Scott goes to get his mom, but she’s not there. Deucalion is, and tells Scott Jennifer took his mother. He promises to help him get the parents if Scott joins him. Stiles gets there and tells Scott they’ll figure something else out, but Scott tells him not this time, and leaves with Deucalion.

Quotes and Comments:

“We were the overlooked. The Emissaries. It was a mistake Deucalion and the Alphas should have never made because I made an oath of my own. From virgins and warriors, from healers, philosophers and guardians to loan me their power so that I could teach these monsters that these monstrous actions would never be overlooked.” (Jennifer to Derek about the mistake the Alpha pack made)

“You’re telling me what to do now? When your psychotic mass-murdering girlfriend, the second one you’ve dated by the way, has got my dad somewhere tied up where he’ll be ritually sacrificed!” (Stiles to Derek after he tells him to be quiet)

I liked parts of this episode, but I wasn’t surprised by the ending or Jennifer’s betrayal. Scott has been darker at points this season and the one person he will do anything for is his mother. I don’t really think he has a plan this time, like he did with Gerard last season. I can’t wait to see what everyone does now though.

I think it’s interesting how Jennifer keeps taking people from their lives. If she truly just wanted revenge just on the Alpha pack, she wouldn’t be taking Stiles and Scott’s parents (and probably Allison’s). There are tons of parents in that town, but she’s making it personal. From that, I’m assuming she’s much more power hungry than we’re lead to believe. So far, she’s sacrificed twelve people to gain power, and she has three more to go before it’s complete.

There were a couple funny moments that made up for it being a fairly serious episode. The Stora fans got a shout out when Stiles mentions touching lips with Cora when she’s awake next time. I thought the moments between the Argent’s and Isaac were solid. Melissa was really awesome, like normal. I really hope none of the parents are killed off. I did like hearing about Jennifer's background finally and finally getting to know Kali a bit more.
