The upcoming thriller Gravity, starring George Clooney and Sandra Bullock and directed by Alfonso Cuaron, debuted two new trailers this week. Clooney and Bullock play an astronaut and a scientist, respectively, who, while on a routine spacewalk, become dislodged from their ship by debris and begin drifting out into space. Both are brief 90 second clips from the movie which follow each other chronologically within the film.
The first trailer depicts the debris tearing apart the ship and setting the events of the film into motion. This one focuses on Clooney's character, Kowalsky, and his attempts to keep in contact with Bullock's character, Dr. Stone, as she begins to drift into space.
The second trailer opens with heavy breathing over the Warner Bros. logo, then moves to a first person perspective from inside Dr. Stone's suit. As she tries to establish contact with Kowalsky, or anyone, the camera zooms out and shows her floating through space within miles of noone.
Both of these trailers give of the the notion that this is will be a very tense movie, one carried by the performances of the two leads, the very capable Clooney and Bullock. According to IMDb, there aren't too many other names in the cast list, so this one will be able to showcase everything these two actors have to offer, much like Moon did for Sam Rockwell. Writer/director Cuaron has dealt with science fiction and thrillers before with the excellent Children of Men, which also happens to be his last theatrically released film. This one seems a little smaller in scale, but that necessarily isn't a bad thing.
Gravity hits theaters on October 4, 2013.
