'The Daily Show' recap: 7/15/13

The July 15, 2013 episode of the Daily Show focuses on the Zimmerman Trial, Latino voting, and Aaron Sorkin.

The episode begins with a brief run down of some funny news stories from the two weeks that the Daily Show was on break. They were pretty funny, so that was worth watching. John Oliver goes on about how excited everyone was to come back to work, until the conclusion of the Zimmerman Trial. George Zimmerman was found not guilty, and Oliver is shocked. He said the most shocking thing for him was how no one was shocked. The system did not fail, it worked exactly as it was designed to work. Oliver said that it could be seen as having some racial under tones, or racial only tones. Zimmerman’s defense lawyer said that if Zimmerman had been Black, he would not have been charged with a crime. Oliver’s response was that, of course (sarcastic), the way our justice system works is to not charge Black men with crimes. There also appears to be no move towards changing Florida’s gun related laws, and Oliver said fine, as long as they were enforced consistently. One woman was convicted, and sentenced with 20 years, for firing her gun into the air in order to scare off her abusive husband.

The second segment focused on the Latino communities reaction to the fail of immigration reform. Oliver brought on Al Madrigal as the senior Latino correspondent. Madrigal explained how annoying it was to constantly have the Latino community bunched together as some sort of homogenous identity. He explained it to Oliver as if Oliver were called French. Oliver broke a bottle, and threatened Madrigal with it. Madrigal then showed clips of him interviewing Latino men about Latino men from other countries, and how racist they came across about each other. He even showed a chart about all people’s political concerns, and Latino people’s concerns. They were the same chart.

The guest for this episode was Aaron Sorkin from News Room. More interestingly, Oliver broke the set. After the second segment, all the power went out, and they had to shoot with what was basically hand held cameras. Oliver, and Sorkin discussed why New Room uses real news a few weeks after it happens, and why Sorkin would want to mire himself in cable news.
