Prosecutor orders arrest of Muslim Brotherhood leaders

As Egypt’s top prosecutor issues arrest warrants for the Muslim Brotherhood’s top leaders, newly-designated interim Prime Minister Hazem el-Beblawi reaches out to the conservative group in hopes of quickly forming a transitional government.

A spokesperson for interim President Adli Mansour has said that all parties would be offered posts in the government, reports Voice of America. This would include the Salafist Nour Party, which originally supported the ousting of President Morsi, and the Muslim Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party, which ousted President Mohamed Morsi belongs to.

Despite this, Mohamed Kamal, a top leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, denied that anyone from the group would participate in the new government.

Egypt’s Islamists and the National Salvation Front have opposed plans to amend the country’s constitution and draft a plan to restore democracy, prompting el-Beblawi to meet with political figures for potential negotiations.

An arrest warrant has been issued for the Muslim Brotherhood’s leader, Mohamed Badie (pictured above), who is accused of inciting the violence that caused the deaths of at least 51 people on Monday, according to the BBC.

Many of the group’s members have already been detained as hundreds of arrest warrants are still outstanding.

The Brotherhood has maintained that the military’s removal of Morsi was a coup, though generals insist they were acting on the will of the Egyptian people.

Morsi’s location has not been disclosed. “For his own safety and for the safety of the country, it is better to keep him in a safe place. Otherwise, the consequences will be dire,” said Badr Abdul Atti, a foreign ministry spokesman.
