Nelson Mandela 'to be allowed home'

Former South African president Thabo Mbeki has said that he believes Nelson Mandela may soon return home from the Pretoria hospital where he has been since June 8.

“I am quite certain that one of these days Madiba will go back home,” he said, according to the Daily Mail.

“One of these days the doctors will agree that he can go and stay at home rather than in hospital.”

Mandela entered the hospital on June 8 due to a recurring lung infection and has been in critical condition.

His wife, Grace Machel, has also hinted that Mandela’s condition is improving. “He continues to respond positively to treatment. I would say that today I am less anxious than I was a week ago.”

However, Mandela’s family has been in and out of the court for weeks with various legal suits.

His daughters, Makaziwe and Zenani, and several of his grandchildren have filed papers to have the directors of three companies formed by Mandela removed, saying that they were not properly appointed, reports AFP.

The three men are George Bizos, a human rights lawyer and old friend of Mandela; Tokyo Sexwale, a former cabinet minister; and Bally Chuene, his former lawyer. The case is set for court on July 29.

Family members also recently went to court to relocate the remains of Mandela’s three deceased children to their original burial location.

Mandla Mandela secretly exhumed the remains in 2011 to move them to Mvezo, where Mandela was born, from Qunu, where Mandela wishes to be buried.
